Some 200,000 people lined Orchard Road on Saturday evening to catch a glimpse of the Chingay parade.
President S R Nathan launched the Chingay, which has been touted as Asia's grandest street and floats parade.
The Soka Association led the parade with a float showcasing dog costumes of all shapes and sizes.
Traditional performances such as the pole act took on an international flavour with teams from Singapore, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia.
Twelve floats also made their way down Orchard Road, surrounded by dancers wearing every colour of the rainbow.
"It's great, the performances, the costumes, even better than last year's," said a spectator.
"It's fantastic. Watching it here is so different from watching it at home," said another, referring to the live telecast on television.
